Although the political history and economic success of Korea during the second half of the twentieth century has gained much attention in the West, related developments in Korea’s perception of its own past and the constant reevaluation of its traditional arts have remained largely unnoticed. My history of art and visual culture of the Choson period (1392-1910) recognizes the discoveries and new methodological approaches of Korean research of the past two decades. I investigate selected “clusters” of objects, and by unwrapping the multiple layers of their cultural and socio-political contexts I cast light on conditions of specific time periods.
