This project draws from original archival research, critical race studies, and geospatial tools in the digital humanities to illuminate how colonial racial formations and knowledge-production intersected each other in Spanish and Portuguese Asia during the Early Modern period. Europeans appropriated visual and cultural literacies they encountered in Asia and the Americas. Similar to the interracial and intercultural dynamic in colonial Mexico, lesser-known Indigenous narrative and pictorial techniques in Asia converged or collided with Western imperial indoctrination and acculturation. Each chapter of this project reveals collaborative European, American, and Asian knowledge-makers along the transoceanic routes connecting the various dominions of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires.
