The Luce/ACLS Program in China Studies report China Studies in an Uncertain Age is featured in a September 8, 2024, Wall Street Journal article titled “China Is Becoming Much Harder for Western Scholars to Study.”

Emily Baum F’15, co-author of the report and advisor to the Program in China Studies, Ke Li F’18, and Lauren Restrepo F’20 are quoted in the article, which focuses on increasing challenges faced by Western scholars studying China. These obstacles are both from restrictions within China, as well as rising anti-China sentiment in North America.

Lauren Restrepo, an anthropologist who studies urban development in authoritarian states, said she likely isn’t able to return to China given the sensitivities around her research, which analyzes how Chinese authorities use urban planning to assert control over ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslim communities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.
