Abstract

I propose to conduct research for and begin the writing of my second book, a study of the ways that literate members of the west Frankish (French) polity understood kingship and how that understanding evolved over the course of the tenth and eleventh centuries. My research program consists of three phases: (1) to lay a foundation in the primary sources and secondary literature not merely of the west Frankish lands, but also of the Anglo-Saxon (England) and German kingdoms which neighbor and interact with the west Frankish kingdom; (2) to spend a year in Europe where I shall consult materials unavailable in the States; and (3) to write the core chapters of the book.
