The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce that Daphne Weber has joined the ACLS staff as Program Officer in Buddhist Studies, as of August 19, 2024. Weber brings extensive experience in Theravada Buddhism and gender studies to The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies and the ACLS International Programs team.

In her new role, supported by a $7.5 million grant from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Global to renew and expand the Program in Buddhist Studies, Weber will help design, implement, and evaluate activities supporting scholars of Buddhist Studies and the communities in which they work. She will help lead new programmatic work focused on community engaged research, increase connections with emerging scholarly networks in Asia and around the world, and expand the resources ACLS offers to international scholars.

Weber received her PhD in Anthropology with expertise in Theravada Buddhism and gender studies, specifically in the context of Thai Bhikkhuni (female monastic) communities. Weber’s work includes extensive participatory field research in Thai temples, supported by awards such as the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship and the Khyentse Foundation Dissertation Scholarship. She is proficient in Thai and regularly collaborates with local and international scholars in her research.

Weber’s emphasis on cross-cultural exposure as a key part of her education demonstrates a commitment to both scholarship and community engagement that aligns with the goals of the Program in Buddhist Studies and the wider work of ACLS to create and sustain a more equitable academy for the 21st century.
