ACLS Welcomes the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) as the 80th Member of Its Federation
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to welcome the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) as the 80th member of its federation of scholarly societies.
The ACLS Board of Directors officially approved 4S as a member society at the 2023 Annual Meeting, which took place in Philadelphia on Friday, April 28, 2023. The society is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary and engaged scholarship in social studies of science, technology, and medicine.
“ACLS is excited to welcome 4S as our latest member society,” said ACLS President Joy Connolly. “Understanding the histories, social impact, and ethics of science and technology is critical to taking stock of their contributions to human development as well as the complexities and challenges they introduce into our lives, from bioengineering to artificial intelligence and nuclear power. We look forward to learning from the innovative work of 4S in advancing science and technology studies both within and beyond the academy.”
As a national federation of 80 learned societies, ACLS represents more than 275,000 scholars, faculty, and students of humanistic fields of study in the United States. Each ACLS member society is an independent, not-for-profit organization focused on promoting the research, publications, education, and impact of the distinct fields of study they represent, as well as supporting members on issues related to employment, maintaining and improving conditions for research, and diversity and inclusion.
