New Pauline Yu Fellowship supports research in Chinese or Comparative Literature

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Pauline Yu Fellowship in Chinese or Comparative Literature as part of our central ACLS Fellowship program. ACLS will begin naming ACLS Yu Fellows in 2020.

With a lead gift from Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, the fellowship honors Pauline Yu, who will retire as President of ACLS in June 2019 after sixteen years of service. Under Yu’s leadership, ACLS has begun innovative programs reaching scholars around the world, deepened the public engagement of scholarship, and established directions for its next century of service to the academy and society.

Pauline Yu said, “Words cannot express how much this means to me. ACLS and I have been connected for 36 years, and it’s a great honor to know that that will continue. I’m deeply grateful to Lisbet, Peter, and the many friends and colleagues who have made this possible.”

The fellowship will be awarded annually to scholars who apply through the central ACLS Fellowship program. The program supports research projects whose ultimate goal is a major piece of scholarly work. Awards range from $40,000 to $70,000 (depending on career stage) and are intended as salary replacement to help scholars devote six to twelve months to teaching and writing.
